Figure

3/25 WiMAX Technology

  • WiMAX technology can provide coverage in both LOS and NLOS conditions.
  • NLOS has many implementation advantages that enable operators to deliver broadband data to a wide range of customers.
  • WiMAX technology has many advantages that allow it to provide NLOS solutions, with essential features such as OFDM technology, adaptive modulation and error correction.
  • Furthermore, WiMAX has many optional features, such as ARQ, sub-channeling, diversity, and space-time coding that will prove invaluable to operators wishing to provide quality and performance that rivals wireline technology.
  • For the first time, broadband wireless operators will be able to deploy standardized equipment with the right balance of cost and performance; choosing the appropriate set of features for their particular business model.

Homework 3-18-2006

WiMAX will indeed accomplish a multitude of consumer applications that will overshadow last mile communication links. Applications such as streaming video to PDA’s, cell phones, and portable PCs are one example. How about downloading music on demand to future versions of the ever-popular iPod or your favorite TV programs to your laptop while you are on a train speeding along at 75 miles per hour? The list goes on and on. Broadband will be a huge revenue engine for the providers who take heed and plan for the future. <full text>

Questions: Why are the wireless application mentioned above not doable by GPRS/3G, or Wi-Fi in terms of their specifications?

Papers about wireless networks applications on social network services

[DOC] Some Social Implications of Ubiquitous Wireless Networks
MA Smith - research.microsoft.com
Groups of people using these tools will gain new forms of social power, ways to organize and coordinate their interactions and exchanges just in time and just in place.

Wireless Location Privacy Protection
B Schilit, J Hong, M Gruteser - www-2.cs.cmu.edu

Location-based services are emerg-
ing as the next killer app in personal
wireless devices, but there are few safe-
guards on location privacy. In fact, the
demand for improved public safety is
pushing regulation in the opposite
direction.

PeopleNet: engineering a wireless virtual social network
M Motani, V Srinivasan, PS Nuggehalli

People often seek information by asking other people even when they have access to vast reservoirs of information such as the Internet and libraries. This is because people are great sources of unique information, especially that which is location-specific, community-specific and time-specific. Social networking is effective because this type of information is often not easily available anywhere else.

The Effects of a Wireless On-Line Community Network on Social Capital
M Mc Nally, M Bannon, J Greaney, A Hickey, M Mc

Technology has been traditionally seen to be a cause of decline in
social engagement and interaction, for example increased
television viewing is associated with lower levels in Social
Capital. However, it is now believed that on-line technology
and CMC can be used to increase social capital. Technology
can achieve this by removing the barriers of time and location,
allowing communication over distance and by allowing
asynchronous interaction.

Features of Skype

1. peer to peer, no server required, therefore, no operation cost like cellular communications
2. overlay, not relying on existing Internet protocols beyond Layer 4, resilient to malfunctions of Internet services
3. scalable, using supernodes among every 500 nodes, adaptive to constant configuration changes
4. high quality codec for crystal voice
5. strong penetration to NAT and firewalls
6. free for now and maybe forever for on-net calls
7. implementation of packet voice
8. consumes reasonable bandwidth, consumes significant CPU
9 . teleconference, voice communications for 5 parties at most
10. millions people online all the times, number keep rising.
11. provide presence like messengers, great feature compared to old phones
