1. What is the business model of MySpace?

2. Using Google Docs.
  • Go to Google Docs. Google Docs lets you write Word documents through an online web service.
  • Write some words in a Word format.
  • Publish the Word document.
  • What's the URL of your document.
  • Add the Google Docs to your personal portal. At the portal page, you should be able to see the active documents.
  • Save your document as .doc and .pdf, the two common formats for documents.
Hint: This is a sample Word document.

3. Using Google Personal Portal.
  • Enter http://www.google.com/ig. The Google account is the same as your Blogger account.
  • Rearrange the templates. And perhaps remove blocks that you don't need.
  • Add new stuff. For now add the Google Reader block. You should be able to see the subscriptions in the Google Reader block of your personal portal.
  • Add the Google Docs into your portal.

Today we have spent some time on Long Tail effects and used examples such as Google, eBay, and Amazon as well as local online businesses. We also went thought the top 10 NPOs who used web technology in smart ways.

On 3/17, we will cover Google services as an in-depth introduction to Web 2.0.

We also arrange student presentations. It is a requirement of this course to make presentations as part of the graduate training.

1. Labels are key elements of Web 2.0.
Professional blogs have labels. In this lab, you will learn how to put labels on your blogs to make them look professional.

  • Check into your blog homepage.
  • Enter "自訂"
  • Follow the steps to create Label Block by drag and drops.
  • Get back to your existing blog posts. Fill the blanks at the field Labels (文章的標籤).
  • Save the changes.
  • Back to the blog and check if the labels come up.
2. Based on CommunityWalk, compile a campus directory that tells the locations of major buildings at CYCU. Place the directory on your own blog by posting the code snippet CommunityWalk generates.

Hint: The latitude and longitude coordinates of CYCU campus location is +24° 57' 31.02", +121° 14' 28.12" and you can take a look at the satellite image

Lecture Outline for 3/10/2007

Today we have spent most of our energy and time on basics of mobile web services and Web 2.0 fundamentals. We talked about context-aware technology, sematic web, and ontology. For Web 2.0, we went through today's major players who shape the Internet in a Web 2.0 way. Some discussions went to the characteristics of Web 2.0 in the last part of today's lecture.

For next week, we will continue on Web 2.0 with more illustrative examples. Some time will be spent on going deeper into blogs, such as elements of social media, making subscriptions, comparisions to bullentin boards, what's inside a blog, and blogging styles for persons and corporates as well.

3. 尊重智慧財產權,引用他人文章須註明出處。並且應該合乎學術常規,以合理的方式引用。
引用以單句為限, 並且明確以引號標示, 切勿整段引用甚至全文引用。引用來源必須具備權威性, 建議使用學術或研究單位, 或是知名公司的資料, 不可使用報紙或一般性商業文章等二手傳播文字。

注意事項

a. blog需正確設定時區顯示時間 。

Do blogs improve research?

我們研究室的部落格, 比較熱絡的有

Sky 看了Prof Jahui我們的研究部落格 覺得非常驚訝, 每一位研究生都有每日工作部落格.
到底每日寫研究日誌有意義或是有幫助嗎?

Berstein 曾寫了以下關於 Do Blogs Improve Writing? 的看法:

  • Frequent writing improves writing.
  • Writing for an audience improves writing.
  • Writing that matters improves writing.
  • Writing on computers improves writing.
個人深表同意.除了常寫多寫可以提升寫作能力外,
寫研究日誌可以整理思緒, 無形中釐清我們對事情的看法,知道我們懂了哪些,還有哪些不懂.
這是一種透過書寫展現出的反省力量, 因此用文字整理一天下來的研究工作, 絕非無意義的反芻或時間的浪費, 這是對今天所有努力的交代, 也是為明天工作方向的熱身.

在書寫的過程中, 我們加深了對今日所學所思的烙印強度,也是給自己再一次改進甚至是發亮的機會, 因為經過一天下來, 也許當下未能解決的問題, 或是蘊釀中的靈光, 在紀錄與回顧的過程中產生了機轉, 因為大腦的下意識或許一直在幫我們找答案找靈感, 而書寫中與自己再次對話正好創造了一個機會.

就溝通與研究團隊的角度, 工作部落格也非常有用. 像是我與 Sky 的 weekly meeting 都很短, 因為 Sky 已經把他的研究發現與進度寫在 sky blog, 所以我幾乎隨時知道他做了什麼, 也盡量可以回應或建議. 所以到了 meeting 時間反而沒事了, 我很喜歡這種團隊合作方式. 如果每個禮拜才能知道過去一周我的研究生發現了什麼, 我豈不錯過即時去分享哪種成功的樂趣呢?

部落格與論壇中的版權與 ID

由於部落格有明確的作者,因此Blog天生具有版權的概念,很多部落格都有Creative Commons 的註記。例如Copyleft vs.
Copyright, Some Rights Reserved等等。

放在論壇的文章,因為論壇是眾人的,而且有些意見可能是從別人的意見得到的靈感,因此比較像是眾人腦力激盪,因此鮮少有論壇註記個人版權的。不過如果有
人故意抄襲他人的意見,通常很快會被發現,遭到網友群起攻擊。

從這個角度來看,部落格比較適合專欄作家,個人記事,模式上接近Column(專欄), Journal(日記),但是大多允許回應。論壇相對來說比較
像社群(Community),每個人只是其中一份子,藉由論壇,大家在其中對等交流與分享。

通常很珍惜自己文章,或是擅於長篇大論的人,多半會選擇Blog,這樣容易建立Identity,塑造風格與論點。貼在論壇就不容易做到這點。
但是Blog也不乏隨性短文,或是趣味極短篇。像是

童言童語配合影片說故事,雖然文章形式上較弱,卻是饒富趣味,深受不少Blog Reader青睞。另ㄧ個例子是 http://fairycraft.blogspot.com/
